What an intimacy coordinator does

An Intimacy Coordinator helps bridge bold storytelling with safe, respectful sets.
We support scenes involving intimacy, nudity, or simulated sex —ensuring they’re approached with consent, communication, and care.

We’re part advocate, part collaborator, part steady presence—
helping cast and crew stay aligned, informed, and supported
as they navigate sensitive material.

We stand as allies—especially for performers from marginalized and LGBTQIA+ communities—ensuring their voices are heard, their identities respected, and their boundaries honored.

We follow all SAG-AFTRA protocols and industry standards for intimacy, documentation, and safety—so that the process is not only creative, but compliant. In doing this we reduce liability for the production.

Sometimes we help shape movement.
Sometimes we simply hold the structure that allows actors to work with clarity.

Always, we ensure boundaries are respected, protocols are followed, and everyone knows exactly what’s happening—and why.

Because when the set is safe, the story can go anywhere.

Services

Intimacy Coordination & On-Set Coaching

As an Intimacy Coordinator, I serve as a bridge between the director’s vision and the performer’s artistry—making sure both are respected in the storytelling process. My work is consent-forward, trauma-informed, and collaborative. I follow all SAG-AFTRA protocols and support scenes of intimacy with care, specificity, and respect.

When intimacy is present, my first role is to hold space—facilitating open communication, clear boundaries, and mutual understanding. I work to ensure performers feel safe, seen, and grounded in the work.

When requested, I choreograph moments of intimacy with the same rigor and intentionality as fight or dance choreography—always in service of story, character, and comfort.

I bring cultural fluency and deep sensitivity to queer and marginalized experiences, and I strive to create emotionally safe sets where bold, grounded storytelling can thrive.

In addition to intimacy coordination, I offer on-set acting coaching when needed—especially when a scene isn’t landing or an actor feels stuck. Trained in both UK and US performance techniques, I adapt to the actor in front of me, helping release tension and reconnect with impulse and truth.

My process is neurodivergent-affirming, production-savvy, and actor-centered. I don’t impose—I listen, calibrate, and support performances that are emotionally alive, precise, and safe for both the actor and the story.

Available for union and non-union film and television productions.

About

Christopher Marino(He/Him) is a Certified Intimacy Coordinator (IPA, 2025) with a specialization in edgy, music-driven storytelling—including horror, experimental work, and psychologically complex material.

As a performer and acting coach with over 30 years of experience across stage, screen, and television, Christopher brings a depth of practical expertise to emotionally demanding work. Conservatory-trained in both the U.S. and U.K., he integrates movement-based methodologies (Butoh, Lecoq), vocal training, and trauma-aware practices into a grounded, actor-centered approach.

He is a founding member of Taffety Punk Theatre Company in Washington, D.C., known for hybrid performance that fuses text, music, and movement. His queer adaptation of Measure for Measure, created in response to North Carolina’s HB2 legislation, received international recognition for its fearless political vision.

Christopher’s outreach includes arts programming for underserved youth in Baltimore, creative collaborations with incarcerated individuals, and training social workers in de-escalation techniques for high-conflict settings.

His former coaching students can currently be seen in high-profile roles across film, television, and streaming platforms. A dual U.S./EU citizen, Christopher is available for projects internationally.

In parallel with his on-set work, Christopher has taught and trained actors nationally and internationally. Christopher is conservatory-trained in both the U.S. and U.K., with a foundation that bridges classical technique and experimental performance. His practice is informed by a wide range of movement and somatic acting methodologies, including Butoh, Lecoq, Roy Hart, Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, and martial arts-based practices such as Tai Chi and Qi Gong.

He has taught acting, movement, and performance both nationally and internationally at universities and drama schools including the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Illinois State University, the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, and Rose Bruford College. His teaching is shaped by decades of experience as both performer and coach, and he brings a process-oriented, artist-affirming approach to all of his educational work.

His ongoing development as a coach and artist has been shaped by a lifelong commitment to hybrid performance, with specialized training in immersive, devised, and music-driven work. This cross-disciplinary background allows him to support performers from a variety of training lineages—meeting the work with flexibility, rigor, and nuance.
